Mirae Asset Financial Group plans to build a 150 trillion won ($109 billion) digital-asset business around Digital X, the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange formerly known as Korbit, as the financial group expands into crypto, stablecoinsreal-world assets and security token offerings.

Founder and chairman Park Hyeon-joo outlined the strategy to Digital X employees in Seoul at an event titled “A New Voyage Begins, Together.”

Park said Mirae Asset wants Digital X to become profitable by 2027 and positioned the exchange as part of the group’s broader financial-services strategy. “Our initial goal is to make Digital X a core pillar of ‘Mirae Asset 3.0,’” Park said.

A longer version of Park’s remarks said, “Our initial goal is to make Digital X a core pillar of ‘Mirae Asset 3.0’ and grow the digital asset business to 150 trillion won ($109 trillion) by leveraging the group’s 1,500 trillion ($1.09 trillion) in client assets.” The $109 trillion figure in that quotation conflicts with the repeatedly stated conversion of the 150 trillion won target to $109 billion.

Mirae Asset was also described as having about $1 trillion in assets under management. Park’s reference to 1,500 trillion won in client assets provides the scale of the traditional financial base the group intends to use as it develops Digital X.

Digital X to span crypto, stablecoins and tokenized assets

Park said Digital X will concentrate on four areas: cryptocurrency, stablecoins, real-world assets, or RWAs, and security token offerings, or STOs. The platform also plans to tokenize physical assets including gold, silver and electricity while developing what Park described as an “onchain finance” ecosystem.

Mirae Asset had previously said it wanted to turn Korbit into something South Korea had not seen before and develop Digital X into an “intelligent investment platform” where knowledge, information and investment insights are organically connected. Mirae Asset also said it planned an investment ecosystem in which RWAs, STOs, stablecoins and digital assets would be interconnected with traditional assets.

Mirae Asset Consulting acquired a 97.15% stake in Korbit in July 2026 for a cumulative 141.4 billion won. The acquisition marked the first time an affiliate of a South Korean financial group took control of a domestic cryptocurrency exchange, after which Korbit was renamed Digital X.

Korbit was founded in 2013 and was South Korea’s first cryptocurrency exchange. Despite that history, it accounted for 0.5% of the country’s cryptocurrency trading market in 2025, according to South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission.

Digital X began waiving trading fees across all won-denominated assets on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026. The zero-fee policy is scheduled to continue through Aug. 24, 2027, overlapping with Mirae Asset’s target of making the exchange profitable during 2027.

South Korea has 11.3 million verified cryptocurrency users and is working on its Digital Asset Basic Act, a broad framework covering stablecoins, virtual asset service provider licensing and cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds.

Mirae Asset’s expansion also comes as Shinhan Financial Group, one of South Korea’s five largest financial conglomerates, develops stablecoin infrastructure and AI-powered payment models with Visa. Shinhan plans to use Visa’s stablecoin platform to test issuance, remittance and redemption functions while the companies develop a Korea-specific business model.

South Korea’s retail cryptocurrency trading volumes often rival those on stock exchanges, making ownership of a licensed exchange a strategic asset for financial groups seeking a direct position in the country’s digital-asset market.

Mirae Asset did not immediately provide additional information when contacted.
