Grayscale expanded in-kind subscriptions across 10 digital asset investment products on Oct. 21, allowing eligible investors to contribute crypto directly in exchange for fund shares instead of first selling their tokens for cash. The program covers products tied to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Avalanche, Chainlink, Dogecoin, Hyperliquid, Solana, Sui, XRP and Zcash.

Grayscale announced the feature by saying, “Introducing in-kind investing at Grayscale: contribute eligible digital assets directly in exchange for shares of a Grayscale product.” The company said the structure reduces the burden of self-custody, may lower execution costs and allows crypto holdings to be incorporated into conventional portfolio management.

Grayscale also said the option gives investors access to traditional brokerage and retirement accounts, collateral use and other portfolio management tools. The company describes itself as the world’s largest digital asset investment platform by assets under management as of Sept. 30, 2026.

Which Grayscale products support in-kind investing?

The program covers the following products:

Product Ticker
Grayscale Avalanche Staking ETF GAVA
Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF BTC
Grayscale Chainlink Trust ETF GLNK
Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF ETH
Grayscale Dogecoin Trust ETF GDOG
Grayscale Hyperliquid Staking ETF HYPG
Grayscale Solana Staking ETF GSOL
Grayscale Sui Staking ETF GSUI
Grayscale XRP Trust ETF GXRP
The Zcash ETF ZCSH

Minimum investments differ by product. Grayscale’s Solana Staking ETF carries the lowest estimated minimum at about $80,300, while the Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF has the highest at about $364,800. The stated amounts are estimates.

Steve Vanourny, Head of Index at Grayscale, said the company sees institutional custody as part of the appeal.

“As digital assets mature, investors are seeking more secure and efficient ways to manage their crypto holdings,” Vanourny said. “With growing cybersecurity threats, including self-custody and DeFi exploits, institutional custody is increasingly valuable.”

Vanourny said in-kind investing connects direct crypto ownership with traditional portfolio management by giving investors access to professionally managed investment products and related portfolio tools.

In-kind activity grows after SEC approval

Use of in-kind transactions has also increased within the U.S. Bitcoin ETP market where the mechanism is available. Their share of Bitcoin ETP activity increased from 28% in March to 62% in June, reflecting a larger proportion of activity conducted through direct asset exchanges rather than cash-based transactions.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto ETPs in July 2025. Those approvals covered transactions conducted by authorized participants. Grayscale’s program extends a way for eligible investors to contribute tokens directly for shares, subject to product-specific terms and intermediary requirements.

“It’s a new day at the SEC,” Chairman Paul Atkins said at the time. “Investors will benefit from these approvals, as they will make these products less costly and more efficient.”
