Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a cryptocurrency custody service in Germany within weeks, with Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) among the main assets and institutions and corporate entities as its primary clients. Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank’s corporate banking division, discussed the plans during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Bangkok.

The bank, which holds more than $2.2 trillion in assets and operates in 58 countries, plans to let customers safeguard digital assets with a regulated lender. An earlier announcement said Deutsche Bank would manage crypto wallets and private keys on behalf of clients, removing the need for them to establish their own custody infrastructure.

The supplied accounts differ on the stablecoin rollout. Deutsche Bank had previously identified USDC and EURC among assets planned for custody when the service launches, with fiat-to-stablecoin conversion services following later. The bank’s September announcement described bitcoin and ether as the first supported assets, with stablecoin integration planned for a later, undefined date.

Deutsche Bank Plans Asia Expansion and Blockchain Services

Deutsche Bank intends to extend its digital-asset presence beyond Germany. The bank plans to expand into key financial centers across Asia by 2027. Podobnik told Reuters the services would move into Asian countries that serve as financial centers as Deutsche Bank seeks to attract more customers to its platform.

The custody push forms part of Deutsche Bank’s wider corporate banking strategy, which targets an 8% compound annual growth rate by 2028. The bank also plans tokenized deposits and a platform that would help clients issue blockchain-based securities, including digital bonds.

Deutsche Bank Research has estimated that the market for tokenized real-world assets could reach $7 trillion in volume by 2035. The bank’s planned blockchain services would therefore extend beyond crypto custody into deposits and securities issued or represented through blockchain infrastructure.
